Searching for the Commanding Officer
When searching Googlebooks, Ancestry.com, GenealogyBank, etc.don't neglect to search for the name of your ancestor's commanding officer if he had military service. You may make discoveries about your ancestor's unit that you did not know.
I accidentally deleted a comment--which I have recopied here:
----------------------- When I got my grt-grt-grf's CivWar pension file at NARA I discovered that the surname of his commanding officer (Snowden) was where the middle name of my grt-grf came from. I had assumed it was a family (perhaps maiden somewhere) name and apparently that was not the case. Laurel
