Generally any search term that is a name at
FamilySearch must include three characters in addition to the wildcard. However, you can use a wildcard operator after just one letter has been entered. Wildcard operators on
FamilySearch include ? for one and only character as its replacement and * as a placeholder for multiple characters.
The following searches on the last name are allowed:
- n*ll--which gets anything that starts with an "n" and ends with two "l"s.
- n??ll--which gets names that start with an "n," then have two letters and end with two "l"s.
I find the search engine on FamilySearch responds to wildcard searches much better than Ancestry. Many times I get the dreaded "too many results" from Ancestry and Ancestry's search requires more letters for the wildcard search than FamilySearch. Do you agree?
